Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things, and revive me in your way. Psalms 119:37
This is part two of a nine part series “Revive us According to… Psalms 119. “Revive Us According to Your Word” was the first part and can be read here. Briefly it encourages us to surrender our hearts from living according to self rule and return to live according to His rule.
When we are awakened to the things of the Spirit the focus of our time and attention also changes. The book of Ecclesiastes tells us that everything under the sun is vain, worthless, that is empty of permanent value. If so easy to slip back so we need to frequently be asking ourselves this question “What am I into?” What has captured my attention that may not necessarily be sinful but is on a path that has little if any benefit?
Our hearts are so easily pulled away from seeing Him who is invisible and getting caught up in the streams of news, politics, sports, technology, fashion, entertainment, our own problems, or whatever other distractions comes along. The broad way is easy, the way of the man and our culture pulls us away from life, but the narrow is the way of faith in Jesus Christ is a difficult path to stay on.
Not only is our personal lives but even in our corporate meetings it is easy to get off the narrow way and onto a way of religion. Isaiah 30 is a prophesy to those “who take counsel, but not of Me and who devise plans, but not of my Spirit, who walk to go down to Egypt, to strengthen themselves in the strength of pharaoh and trust in the shadow of Egypt. Egypt is symbolic of trusting in human ways and human strength. Isaiah 31:3 says “Now the Egyptians are men, and not God; and their horses flesh, and not spirit.” Far too often the agenda of man usurps the still small voice of the Spirit. A high quality entertaining set of songs; and a stirring message can be pulled off with little or any involvement of the Holy Spirit.
Revive us in Your way of looking and listening until we see Your path and hear Your voice say “this is the way walk in it.” We repent from walking after other things, looking to other things to try to satisfy. May we turn as the Church from trying to make a good performance and turn instead to expecting the Holy Spirit to show us the way and take us down His path.
Thus says the LORD: “Stand in the ways and see,
And ask for the old paths, where the good way is,
And walk in it. Then you will find rest for your souls. Jeremiah 6:16
Teach me Your way, O LORD;I will walk in Your truth; Unite my heart to fear Your name. Psalm 86:11
Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “ This is the way, walk in it,” Whenever you turn to the right hand Or whenever you turn to the left. Isaiah 30:21
I will bring the blind by a way they did not know; I will lead them in paths they have not known. I will make darkness light before them, And crooked places straight. These things I will do for them, And not forsake them. Isaiah 42:16
“The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the LORD; Make His paths straight.’” Mark 1:3
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. John 14:6And make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be dislocated, but rather be healed Hebrews 12:13
